It’s the same as with OOXML: They switched their proprietary standards to XML. That’s definitely an advantage, since XML is much easier to read and write than binary garbage like Flash or DOC. So MS might be in advantage of Adobe in this area.

But they always refuse to work with existing standards. Why not promote and extend SVG? Do whatever is possible in SVG with SVG, extend it where your software needs more than the standard provides (as Adobe did with audio support in SVG), but then please work with the standardisation bodys to extend the official standard.

But MS likes their own creations much more than consensus. So we’ll have to live with plugins, instead of making use of the browser’s native SVG support, that gets better and better. So apart from OpenSource enthusiats noone will use SVG on the web, now that Adobe likes Flash more than SVG. (There is one exception out there: Praise Opera for their ongoing SVG support. Their widgets show what sort of web applications you can build with standards, and that’s amazing!)

I think the jury is still out on this aroubnd the world.. Licensing is a really issue and after reading miguel blog there no initial support for OGG or GSTreamer. Hardly linux ready.. Also “we will accept patches for gstreamer is code for we don’t care really..

SVG is browser-native on anything but IE nowadays.
That’s only one of the reasons SVG is growing.

the moonlight licence has a number or proviso for microsfot to cancel at anytime… it’s not looking like something i’d wanna help make popular only to have microsfot in 3 years time decide only vista can do after all.
