I really like the effect this produces but I can’t quite figure out how to get it working with Inkscape. Could you give me a quick run through on how you did it or even a nudge in the right direction?
    Thanks :)

  2. Hylke says:

That’s really cool, did you make those yourself?
And I agree with Jude, please tell us how to do something like this easily. :)

  3. Hylke, yes sure I made it :)

there are some new Live path effects in inkscape.
one for spiro and one for pattern along paths .

i combined the two to make that brush effect

You can nab the svg from here i think http://paste.ubuntu.com/19018/ public domain if you really want to use it.

Wooooow! That’s so awesome! You have Got to make an entry for a future 0.47 splash context! :D Ooh, how many different forms did it take you to make the last one, and how long did all three take? :D Did you make use of the new Spiro setting for pencil and bezier, or did you apply it as LPE from the LPE dialog?

  5. Valerie: I used the spiro setting for pen (which applies spiro as an LPE for now)

for the s it was about 6 shapes consisting of 6 nodes each with a few grow shrink transforms and different colours.. thats all

most of the shapes in the blue whale one contain only 3 spiro nodes.

they were a bit of playing . i wasn’t trying to make something

  6. Valerie says:

Wow! Only 6 shapes! Imagine the possibilities for design!

Watch out commercial software! Inkscape will soon become the designer program of choice! :D (and yes, Spiro lines are So lovely!)

The whale is Awfully cute! Do you have a gallery somewhere for all the future works you do with Inkscape?

  7. RedBirdiii says:

    Wow!! That’s nice!
I’d like a step-by-step tutorial if you can, pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase!

    Thank you

    Very beautiful curves

  9. Wonderful. I like it so much… I agree with RedBirdliii on the tutorial. Thanks for this inspiration.

Downloaded the current Developer build. They’ve added lots of new Live Path Effects, I see. Guess the only way find out what it all does is to experiment.
@Valerie: I know it’s enthusiasm speaking, but no it won’t. Inkscape is very promising Alpha software, and I like to experiment with it as I’m a fan of the promise of SVG (sadly never realised, especially with no support from Microsoft), but for starters, it’s an SVG editor, so will only every be for Screen-based media, never by definition for print, so no threat to Illustrator etc. Moreover, to be useful for professional use, it needs plenty more things finished and a LOT more polish. And finally, unless GTK improves dramatically, or Inkscape is ported to native Windows and OSX graphics, it won’t happen as it’s just too damn slow. And needing X11 on Mac is a showstopper.

  11. Martin,

SVG is for print and contains support for multiple colour spaces and calibrations.
Support is happening in inkscape right now so dismissing a svg editor being screen-media exclusive is flat out wrong.
infact, most of my day-job deals with publishing. 50% of my output is for print with all illustrations made with Inkscape.

native GTK (without X11) is on the way thanks to the guys at immendio .. I don’t have a problem waiting since I use linux :) but yesterday my girlfriend created a website design using inkscape quite successfully under x11 on macOSX. only her second time opening inkscape and the design is quite impressive (i wish she would let me post it) the workflow was much the same as mine on linux.

I regret your perception that SVG has never been realised. I personally have leveraged the format to perform complex translation solutions. automated diagrams graphics and beautiful vector images. Firefox supports it very well (but I wasnt waiting for that)

What matters to me as a creative professional is that SVG is the new way to work with vector images.
SVG is a format where style, objects, composition, text and media can be abstracted completely. With SVG, you are working with the purest forms of design. Your beautiful design today will be brilliant to use tomorrow.

Inkscape has been my professional vector graphics tool since sodipodi in early 2003. During that time I have been a very happy design professional.
My clients have been design studios, engineering companies, publishing houses, software developers and govenrment.. All customers have been able to work with Inkscape and SVG no worries. Most in more ways than I expected.

  12. And what the hell is that comment about Microsoft supporting SVG?
Microsoft are a vendor of other software that Isn’t inkscape. So they have nothing to do with my workflow.
Even if I was the biggest Silverlight fanboy and used XAML all day: Inkscape can do all my illustration and output to XAML easy! those tutorials are all over the net.

Use your common sense man. We don’t listen to companies selling hats to tell us what pants to wear right? So if you want to wear the pants, use Inkscape.

I’m lucky to be working for Red Hat and wear the Inkscape pants. It’s a good look i’m telling you.
With free software all around, creativity is what I invest in.

on another note: I really wish xara would come back to being fully Open Source upstream.
The rendering code could be used in so many more places than just creative software.

We’re lucky to have Carl and the other Cairo contributors.
Inkscape is very close to being fully-cairoified and its running great. Further optimisation in Cairo has the support of everyone who uses it .. that includes large projects like Mozilla Firefox and the GNOME desktop.

  13. RedBirdiii says:

Well said Andy.. I totally agree!
Now, where is the tutorial, please Andy!

  14. soon as i get back from GUADEC RedBirdiii :)

  15. RedBirdiii says:

    Thanks,

I’ll be watching here.. waiting for you!

All the good luck at GUADEC..

  16. RedBirdiii says:

Haven’t you gotten back from GUADEC already?
GUADEC finished since Saturday 12th of July 2008

I’m still waiting for that tutorial!

Andy, if it is a heavy burden on you.. just say so.. so that I don’t bother you anymore..

    I love you, man..

  17. Jodi Foster says:

Where can I download the latest build to us spiro? I can’t seem to find it anywhere. I love inkscape and would love to use the spiro!

    Andy,

I just find this very interesting and am trying to create the same effect as you created in the “s” design, but can’t get the svg file from paste.ubuntu.com is it available somewhere else?

    Thank You.
